It’s usually difficult to find a nice restaurant around touristy spots, but Inn The Park is an exception to the rule. Located right in the middle of St James’s Park, it is as charming for lunch as it is for an afternoon tea.
There are self service facilities, but you will get the best out of the place by taking a seat on the terrace and enjoying the view of the fountain. If the weather is a bit cold, you’ll be pleased to know that blankets are provided. Though, if it is sunny and warm, there is an outdoor bar that serves jugs of Pimms, a barbecue for – made on request – burgers and even massive cushions to lie on the grass.
The recipes are simple and vary with the seasons, so expect the likes of pumpkin soup in winter and a chilled gazpacho in summer. For brunch, the fish cakes with a soft poached egg are good, and are made even better by a side order of fresh spinach or thyme-roasted potatoes. Salads with fresh seafood, like crab or squid, are always available as well.
Like many people, you may just want to drop in to the Inn for one of their desserts, or something from the ice-cream trolley; full afternoon teas are available too.
In any case, for a casual meal or for a refreshment, Inn The Park is a pleasant place to stop by. While the service isn’t always perfect, the view is.
